Thermal Printing Overview
Thermal printing generates labels as they are needed throughout the workflow process (Pro Workflow). Thermal printing reduces expenses and waste related to consumables and paper shredding – only print what you need, when you need it.
Benefits of Thermal Printing
The benefits of using thermal printers in your pharmacy workflow include:
-
Print labels and receipts when you need them (instead of at the beginning of the process).
-
No need to print a full label set for an extra vial copy.
-
Less waste of labels and receipts.
-
Fewer issues with printer and paper jams (no toner).
-
Save on toner.
-
Vial copies print after the barcode is verified.
-
The official receipt, medication record and privacy receipt print after the technical validation and clinical review are complete.
Implementing Thermal Printing
To implement thermal printing in your pharmacy workflow you will need to do the following:
- Turn on all applicable settings for Pro Workflow. For more information, see Configuring Pro Workflow.
- Set up Thermal Label preferences (Pharmacy Preferences). For more information, see Thermal Label Preferences.
- After completing the Scan Verify step (waiting for packaging), the vial copies will print. To learn more, see Packaging the Prescription – Scan Verify.
- After completing technical validation and clinical review for the prescription in Prescription e-Verify, the official receipt, privacy receipt, and medication record will print. For more information see, Performing Clinical Review for a Prescription.
Tip: A regular maintenance schedule will keep the thermal printer clear of adhesive build-up, ensuring in runs smoothly day in and day out. Download a copy of the Thermal Printer Hardware Guide to learn how to clean the thermal printer.
